First of all, if you are wondering how this is going to tie into real estate- just wait! I just wanted to relate my thoughts about “Bucket Lists”.
A couple of weeks ago, I got to cross an item off my Bucket List. Everyone who knows me, knows that I’m a big NASCAR fan. I’ve been to races across the country, and I’ve had season tickets at Texas Motor Speedway since they built the tract. Last week I traveled to Daytona Florida with two great friends and experienced Speed Weeks and the Daytona 500. For a NASCAR fan, this is about as good as it gets! Four days filled with racing- capped off with the Daytona 500 this past Sunday. I took it all in. We camped in an RV on the speedway property just outside of turn one. We went to the museum, and even drove on the site of the original Daytona beach track on the edge of the ocean.
I wondered as I traveled to Florida if the weekend would be truly special, or would it be just another race? At every turn (literally!) the events of the weekend exceeded my expectations! As I look back at the trip, I got to thinking- How many times have you looked forward to an event, only to be let down when it happens? Last year Jan crossed an item off her Bucket List. We traveled to the Grand Canyon along old Route 66. I have to say that my expectations where much lower than hers, and I hoped that she would not be disappointed when we got to the Canyon. As with Daytona, the Grand Canyon was truly Grand for both of us!
So- are most people’s Bucket List items so epic in scale that they rarely disappoint? Or, are you so excited to have the adventure that no matter what- it will be good in your mind? I can think of several places I’ve been to, stayed at, or even ate at there were disappointing. Sometimes we will show a client a house that looks great in the photos but not so good in person. But none of those where Bucket List items.
At Daytona I met a younger (early 30’s) couple that was at the same time filling and emptying their Bucket. They were planning to attend 12 uniquely American events in 12 months. The Daytona 500, Kentucky Derby, Indy 500, and Christmas Tree lighting at Rockefeller Plaza were among their planned adventures. It made wonder what 12 events I would choose!
As we move through 2019, I would be interested to know- Do you have a Bucket List adventure planned for this year? What is the best Bucket List journey you have done?
